SHOVKHUNENKO OLEKSIY, born on March 9, 1884, Kherson, died on March 12, 1974, in Kyiv. Ukrainian painter and watercolorist, master of landscape, still life and portrait. Peopleo’s Artist of the USSR (1974). Current member of the USSR Academy of arts (since 1947). He received his art education at the Odessa art school (1908) and St. Petersburg Academy of arts (1917). Teacher in Odessa – Polytechnic University of Fine Arts (1926), Odessa Art Institute (1929) and Kyiv Art Institute (1936-1965). Oleksiy is the creator of numerous portraits of writers, actors, architects, sculptors, academics, generals etc. The artist uses complex lighting, building colour by composing warm, reddish-yellow and cold, greyish-blue tones. In 1937 received the award Gold Medal at the Paris International Exhibition Art for his watercolours series. His still life paintings of Alexei Shovkhunenko are also famous. The Kherson art Museum has 154 works of him. He was awarded the USSR Shevchenko National Prize (1970). His works are displayed in many museums in Europe and the United States.
